One of the most compelling aspects of Arabesque tile is its use of geometry as symbolism . Repeating patterns can extend infinitely in all directions, serving as a visual metaphor for eternity and the boundless nature of God. Circles, frequently used in arabesque designs, have no beginning or end and represent unity, infinity, and divine perfection.

Islamic scholars and artists believed geometry reflected the underlying laws of the universe as created by God. The mathematical precision, symmetry, and balance found in arabesque tile evoke harmony and order—qualities meant to inspire awe, peace, and reverence.

The Arabesque Characteristics & Structure

The Arabesque design style has many sub-styles, some more simplified like Moroccan tile, others extremely detailed and elaborate. Let's take a look at the main principles that characterizes all versions:

All Arabesque pattern styles have a complex structure, which usually consists of a single design, or tile, (not necessarily square) which is reflected and rotated and seamlessly repeated to cover a surface.

Two Main Structural Elements:

The first consists of lines and angles - reflected and rotated that in turn create geometric shapes in the negative spaces.

The second, is the eternal spiral - spiraling lines, seemingly endless, curved and overlapping stems.

The designs can be composed with only one of these structural shapes, or both in combination, creating extremely intricate and elaborate designs.

Layout and Composition

Arabesque designs are composed of elements that are evenly and symmetrically distributed. Symmetry, rhythm and balance between the shapes and lines are very important. It’s considered to represent the completeness and perfection of God. It also makes the patterns appear flat, with no particular or dominating foreground motifs. All motifs are equally important.

 Motifs

In the early ages of the Arabesque style, common motifs were stylized plants & vines. Some versions of Arabesque patterns are completely abstract, with lines and geometric shapes only. In later versions the motifs were still stylized but more realistically depicted, so that the flowers and plants could be identified. In general, the Arabesque motif elements are geometric shapes, lines in combination with overlapping and scrolled plants, leaves and flowers. Some versions also depict animals.

It’s all connected!

Arabesque has many different influences and has in turn influenced other design styles throughout history. For example, you can definitely see the eternal spiral used in many background layers of the “Arts and Crafts” as well as “Art Nouveau” pattern designs.

 Architectural and Artistic Applications

As Islamic culture spread from the Middle East across North Africa and into Spain (Al-Andalus) , arabesque designs became a defining architectural element. These intricate patterns adorned mosques, palaces, manuscripts, pottery, furniture, and textiles , including iconic structures such as the Taj Mahal .

Tilework played a particularly important role. Ancient Islamic artisans developed innovative glazing technologies as early as the 8th century, including:

Tin-opacified glazes for crisp, opaque whites

Vibrant mineral-based colors like cobalt blue, copper turquoise, manganese purple, and antimony yellow

Lusterware , created by applying silver or copper oxides over glazed surfaces to achieve iridescent, metallic finishes

Often applied to stonepaste bodies and fired multiple times, these techniques demonstrated an advanced understanding of chemistry while allowing for complex, polychromatic designs. Beyond their beauty, these glazes also provided functional benefits such as waterproofing and durability.

During the Renaissance, European artists encountered these designs through trade and travel and began adopting them into Western decorative arts. They coined the title “Arabesque,” meaning “in the Arabic style” in Italian and French.

A Mountain Home Full of Heart: Kirsten & John’s Vibrant Mt. Crested Butte Condo Renovation

When Kirsten and John were given the chance to relocate to Mt. Crested Butte, they jumped at the opportunity—and we’re so glad they did! Their move brought them to one of Colorado’s most breathtaking communities, and it also brought them to us. Paradise Interiors was lucky enough to work with this amazing couple to transform their newly acquired mountain condo into a home that truly reflects their vibrant, joyful spirits.

A Dream Property With Unmatched Mountain Views

Their condo was already a dream: ski-in/ski-out access, a covered deck overlooking sweeping views of the mountain and the Base Area, and sunlight spilling into almost every corner. But while the location was unbeatable, the interior needed some thoughtful updates to feel like “them.”

Kirsten and John wanted a home that celebrated warmth, style, and character—something bright and lively, just like the two of them. Together, we got to work bringing that vision to life.

Phase One: European White Oak Floors That Transformed the Space

The renovation began from the ground up—literally. The couple chose stunning European White Oak engineered hardwood flooring from Scheucher/Vantia. These wide planks, with their exquisite graining and soft, natural tone, instantly elevated the entire condo.

The new floors brightened every room, created visual cohesion throughout the home, and perfectly complemented the sunny disposition of both the space and its homeowners. With expert installation, the result is clean, elevated, and timeless—exactly what this mountain retreat deserved.

Phase Two: A Powder Room Packed With Personality

Next, we tackled the centrally located powder room. While the original space was perfectly fine, it lacked personality. Today, it’s probably our favorite powder room we’ve ever designed!

The moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm wave of joy. The star of the show is the wildflower-themed mural wallpaper by Mind the Gap—expertly installed by Precise Painting. This bold yet thoughtful choice pays homage to Crested Butte, proudly known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado.

To ground the space, we selected a classic black Brittany vanity by James Martin, accented with gold fixtures that shimmer beautifully against the whimsical backdrop. The combination is striking, inviting, and wonderfully curated—making this small space one of the most memorable in the home.

A Home as Lovely as the Homeowners

Working with Kirsten and John has been an absolute joy. Their style is playful, intentional, and full of heart—just like they are. Designing for clients like them is what makes our work at Paradise Interiors so fulfilling.

Luxury Mountain Remodel at The Lodge at Mountaineer Square

Just steps from the ski lifts, The Lodge at Mountaineer Square is one of Crested Butte’s most desirable slopeside destinations. Built in 2006–07 as part of the Mueller family’s first major development after acquiring the resort, this luxury property combines mountain charm with modern convenience—making it a favorite for those seeking upscale comfort in the heart of the action.

When our clients purchased their Mountaineer Square condo, they came to Paradise Interiors to help them reimagine and refine their mountain retreat—transforming a dated space into a timeless, functional, and inviting home that celebrates Crested Butte’s natural beauty.

Overcoming Structural Challenges

Like many buildings constructed on the mountain during that era, the Lodge’s structure features steel-reinforced walls, concrete floors, and interconnected plumbing systems , making remodeling no small feat.

Our clients wanted to reconfigure their layout—moving walls and relocating plumbing to improve flow and function. However, 4-inch-thick concrete floors and metal supports required precise engineering and careful craftsmanship. To reroute plumbing for new showers, sinks, and toilets, our team meticulously chiseled new pathways, refilled the concrete, and coordinated the work with building management—since all units share a single water shutoff.

Even with these challenges, Paradise Interiors completed the remodel efficiently and without disrupting neighboring units , demonstrating our expertise in complex, high-end mountain renovations.

The Design Process

This remodel unfolded in carefully planned phases, allowing our clients to transform their space over time.

Phase One focused on enhancing the main living areas—installing new hardwood floors, custom countertops, a stunning fireplace design, and a recessed bar that now serves as the home’s focal point. The result was a sophisticated balance of rustic mountain warmth and modern luxury.

Phase Two brought new life to the bathroom and closet in the “lock-out” suite. The clients needed more storage, comfort, and visual cohesion with the rest of their home. Working closely with them, we curated materials and finishes that elevated the space from a dated 1990s bathroom to a mountain-inspired spa retreat —complete with natural textures, layered lighting, and timeless craftsmanship.

Completing the look are touchless Artforma LED mirrors over the his-and-her vanities, adding a futuristic touch to this mountain retreat.

Vanity 3 also features a backsplash of distressed subway tiles from Glazzio, further enhancing the room's texture and depth.
